Episode 219 - Fresh Organic Food For All
It's all about food and we start in the school cafeteria. The menus at most school cafeterias are filled with pizzas, corn dogs, grilled cheese and such...all simply pulled from the freezer and heated up. But we found one cafeteria that's different thanks to Chef Ann Cooper. She is on a mission to change the menu and provide fresh, organic and healthy foods for students. Jordan caught up with her to get the whole story.
Then to Art class...for food? Well sort of. We found an Art teacher, with an obvious sweet tooth, who takes advantage of that obsession and teaches others at the same time. Jessica visits the studio of Art teacher Charlotte Kruk. Her art class gets all of their raw materials from discarded recyclable stuff. But this art teacher is also a fashion designer and uses candy wrappers to make all of her clothes! This you have to see.
Then we visit a local farmers market to check out the bounty of locally grown organic produce. There are a lot of reasons to buy organic and to buy local, but we wanted to hear and see for ourselves. So Jessica goes to an organic farm that specializes in tomatoes and melons…and a whole lot more.
Finally, Cooking 101. Only these future chefs are learning more than slicing and dicing. It's all about healthy, sustainable food and why everyone, not matter what their background and where they live, should have access to it. It's food justice for all.
